From the Shaman's Workshop: An Earth Hod
Get Grounded With The Earth HodIf you wish to connect with Mother Earth in a profound way through your working with shamanic ceremony, meditation or other spiritual methods, you will eventually have the sensation of melding with her, as if you are becoming more and more rooted into her life-giving soil. Hypnotherapists and others leading guided meditations will often call on such imagery to help someone "get grounded." The Earth Hod symbolically represents just that.
The base is made from a white oak tree root, and you know how strong is the oak. Its roots are legendary and known for their strength and resiliency, sending their roots deep into the soil for union and nourishment in order to keep the massive oak vital and growing. It was a tree most revered and believed sacred by Celtic and other peoples. I could not easily identify the wood used in the Hod itself, though it was quite resistant to drilling, a fact which leads me to suspect it is ash. Securing it to the base is copper and hemp, the ancient materials which have served humankind for millenniums. And representing the heart of and our love for Mother Earth and her abundance is a small emerald chip held by copper wire and special copper flanges.
Placing this beautiful, primal Hod on your altar and filling it with herbs or other dry materials or stones will add the grounding you need when you feel troubled or just when you may need a reminder to keep your feet on the ground.
